Gerald Van Der Kaap was born in 1959 in Enschede, the Netherlands.
He currently lives and works in Amsterdam.
Van Der Kaap is a visual artist who works with photography, video, video installation, and new media; he also performs as a DJ and VJ under the moniker 00-Kaap.
From 1978-80, Van Der Kaap studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten St. Joost in Breda.
In the 1980s, he worked as a producer for various art magazines, such as Zien (1980-86) and Blind (1989).
He also taught New Media at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from 1992-2002.
Van Der Kaap is known as an early adopter of new media in the visual arts. The individual image loses its value in Van Der Kaap's work as he favors the mass-accumulation of images within databases and the generation of image sequences through computer software. His photographic and moving images are also marked by digital manipulation, demonstrating the tension between representation and reality.
